![]() It’s unclear whether the board can even get together before the June 30 deadline to discuss it because university presidents typically take vacations at this time of year. There is nothing compelling the Mountain West to extend its exit fee deadline or lower the fee. The problem: SDSU currently has nowhere to go next year. So for the time being, de la Torre has been removed from the Board of Directors, as the San Diego Union-Tribune first reported, and SDSU’s estimated $6 million annual conference distribution is set to be withheld as part of the exit fee. The bylaws state that a school resigns from the MWC Board of Directors immediately upon its notice of resignation from the league. So what now?Īt the moment, the Mountain West is acting as if San Diego State will officially leave the conference next year. ( The Athletic’s Max Olson has reported the Big 12 and SDSU don’t view each other as priorities right now). The fact that San Diego State asked about extending the Mountain West’s deadline does not indicate confidence that an invitation from the Pac-12 is coming by June 30. It’s also not clear what the Pac-12 will look like after that deal is set, as Colorado and Arizona have been eyed by the Big 12. The Pac-12 has maintained it would like to finish its media rights deal before adding any members. San Diego State doesn’t appear to have a formal Pac-12 invitation right now, but if it were to get one, it would prefer to make the move for 2024-25. Wicker has said in the past that San Diego State likely can’t pay a $34 million exit fee. That tentative deadline has been pushed back and back and is suddenly running up against San Diego State’s ideal departure date in order to exit the Mountain West for the 2024-25 academic year. The Pac-12 hoped to have its new media rights deal by December last year. Conference bylaws require “written notice to the Conference and the other Members on or before the preceding June 30.”Īfter the Mountain West replied to San Diego State that it had accepted the school’s notice to leave next year, SDSU responded by saying its first letter was not an official notice to leave, but rather an attempt to have a discussion as it looked at its options with a potential Pac-12 invitation date unknown. Last week, San Diego State president Adela de la Torre sent a letter to the Mountain West’s other 11 presidents and commissioner Gloria Nevarez, indicating that San Diego State intended to leave the conference and wanted to discuss extending the conference’s June 30 exit fee deadline by another month, or perhaps lowering the fee or paying it over a longer period of time.īecause the letter was sent to all of the league presidents, the rest of the Mountain West interpreted it as SDSU officially triggering its exit from the league. What did San Diego State tell the Mountain West? The feeling is that the listed fees would help offset the change in television revenue that may come from losing a member, with the intention of keeping everyone in the league financially whole. Those exit terms were most recently agreed upon by league members in April 2021. ![]()
